CHRYSLER CHILDREN’S FAIR

DFA Children Activities Drum
The Chrysler Children’s Fair creates a magical, hands-on experience where everything is possible. Prepare to be amazed at this oasis of youthful delight in the middle of Wayne State University. The Chrysler Children’s Fair is a land ruled by “little people” where strollers have the right-of-way and children are encouraged to explore their creativity and learn about the arts.

YAMYOUTH ARTISTS’ MARKET

Young people ages 8 to 18 are invited to explore their creativity and experience the satisfaction of budding entrepreneurship. Modeled after the adult artists’ market, the Youth Artists’ Market offers the opportunity for Festival visitors to purchase the work of these young artists. Download the Youth Artist Market Application. The deadline for submission is April 28, 2008.

BOX CITY

Sponsored by Charter One Bank

boxcitykids3_g.gifBox City is an interdisciplinary experience that teaches how cities are planned, or not planned. Created by the Center for Understanding the Built Environment (CUBE), Box City is used to show children what makes a quality city and how citizens can participate in the planning and design of their home town. Box City is staffed by volunteers that act as city planners, developers, architects, community activists, and even the mayor, who guide the participants in designing their ideal city. Children of all ages participate, along with many adults, by getting a building permit for what they want to place in the city. These permits are approved by the mayor, and theboxcitykids1_g.gif children are given their building materials. The buildings are made from specially designed cardboard boxes supplied by CUBE, which the children then design using construction paper, crayons, glue, and their own imagination. With the help of one of Box City’s urban planners, the children’s buildings will be placed on a city grid based on the appropriate use of the structure.
