While at the Museum, don’t miss the exciting and colorful exhibition titled Textural Rhythms - Constructing the Jazz Tradition Contemporary African American Quilts. Look for the Charles H. Wright Museum booth in the Festival’s Chrysler Children’s Fair. The booth with host the Art of Adornment workshop which allows participants the opportunity to make wearable art, using precious minerals, stones, and gems. Creating and wearing jewelry has always been an essential component of traditional African culture.

Come inside during our regular business hours to tour our newly reinstalled galleries! If you’re short on time, explore one of our one-hour self guided tours. On Friday, the DIA presents a special live performance by Kristin Hersh in our Detroit Film Theatre (enter on John R Street) - two shows 7:00 & 8:30pm. Her solo career and work with her band, Throwing Muses, has revealed many facets of this prolific talent. Her solo musical trajectory has taken her from her acoustic debut to her appearance in 2005 at the London South Bank Centre’s prestigious Meltdown Festival, appearing alongside Sinead O’Connor, Beth Orton, Tori Amos and event curator Patti Smith. On Saturday, Visit the 40th Michigan Student Film and Video Festival in the Detroit Film Theatre (enter on John R Street)! Saturday, see the K-8 entries at 10a, 1p, 3p, and 5p. Sunday, check out the high school student entries at 10a, 1:30p, 3:30p, and 5:30p. Create your own work of art on the DIA lawn, or visit us at the Chrysler Children’s Fair on Saturday and Sunday.

In celebration of Black Music Month and the Detroit Festival of the Arts, the Detroit Public Library presents We are a Musical People. The exhibit expresses our love of music through image and symbol of family, community and history. A collaboration of DPL’s E. Azalia Hackley Collection, Detroit Children’s Museum, First Circle, Inc., and the Fred Hart Williams Genealogical Society. Cass Lobby and Concourse. This year the Focus: HOPE Community Arts Department celebrates 12 years of bringing high school students from diverse communities together through our award-winning program, Focus on the Mission. This exhibit reflects the creativity and enthusiasm of high school students who will go into the future exerting positive influence on attitudes toward culture, race, religion, and poverty. Third Floor. For more than 60 years Detroit photographer Bill Rauhauser has captured this complex and beautiful city through his camera lens. See photographs from the recently acquired Bill & Doris Rauhauser Photography Archive in the Burton Historical Collection. On Saturday, teens 13-17 can compete for prizes and supremacy in Computer Game Wars - H.Y.P.E. Helping Young People Excel in the library’s new teen center. 1-3pm. Also on Saturday, make a craft with DPL Children’s Services in the Chrysler Children’s Fair.
DETROIT RADIO INFORMATIONAL SERVICE (DRIS)
